AI and Automation in Ajman and Sharjah: Working With a Local Team

We are based in Ajman Free Zone, which means most of our neighbours are not the kind of company the AI industry writes case studies about. They are traders, manufacturers, contractors, freight forwarders and family businesses running on a mixture of an accounting package, a WhatsApp group and a very experienced person who knows where everything is. The automation that helps them is not the automation that gets demonstrated at conferences, and the gap between those two things is worth writing down.

Why the brief is different outside Dubai

A Dubai service business usually comes to us with a customer-facing problem: leads, response times, a booking journey, a chatbot. Companies in Ajman and Sharjah more often arrive with an operations problem, and it is nearly always made of paper.

• Documents arrive in formats you do not control. Supplier invoices as photographs in WhatsApp, delivery notes as scans, packing lists as PDFs with a different layout per supplier. Somebody retypes all of it.
• The systems are older and fewer. Often one accounting system, a spreadsheet estate around it, and no API on the thing that matters most. Integration work here is less about connecting two modern SaaS tools and more about getting data out of something that was never designed to share it.
• Margins are thinner, so payback windows are shorter. A trading company will not wait eighteen months. If it does not pay for itself inside a year, it does not happen, and that is a reasonable position.
• Knowledge sits with people, not systems. The most valuable process in the company frequently lives in one person's head. That is a risk before it is an inefficiency.

None of this makes the work less interesting. It does mean that a proposal built around a customer-facing AI assistant is usually answering a question these companies did not ask.

What actually pays back here

Document extraction is the one that surprises people. Reading a supplier invoice whose layout changes per supplier is genuinely hard for rules-based software and genuinely easy for a modern model, which is one of the few places where the AI label is doing real work rather than marketing. Industrial and warehouse work, honestly

We get asked about industrial automation in Ajman reasonably often, and it is worth being precise about the boundary. If you mean PLCs, sensors, motor control and machine safety on a production line, that is a controls engineering discipline and we are not the right people. If you mean everything that happens around the machines, which is where most of the waste usually sits, that is squarely our work:

• Production and stock data pulled off whatever system holds it and into a report nobody assembles by hand.

Does the emirate on the invoice change the price?

Somewhat, and less than people expect. Rates in Sharjah and Ajman generally sit below Dubai agency rates for comparable work, mostly because the overhead structure behind the invoice is different rather than because the engineering is. What moves the number far more is scope and delivery model. What a nearby team does change is the quality of the first two weeks. Mapping a process properly means standing in the warehouse watching the paper move, and asking the person who actually does it why they keep a second notebook. That conversation goes differently in person, and it is the part of the project that most determines whether the automation is worth anything.

How to start without committing to much

1. 1Pick the process people complain about most, then pick a smaller one next to it. The most painful process is usually painful because it is complex and contested. Prove the approach on something boring first.
2. 2Count the hours before anyone quotes. How many times a month, how long each takes, who does it. A partner who cannot put a number on the return should not be quoting on it.
3. 3Insist it runs in your accounts. Your cloud, your credentials, your data. This matters more than any feature discussion.
4. 4Agree who owns it after handover. Automations are live software. Without a named owner they degrade quietly and you find out from a customer or an auditor.
5. 5Ask what happens when it breaks. If monitoring and alerting are not in the proposal, they are not in the price.
